Acupuncture Changes Brain's Perception and Processing of Pain, Researchers Find

— Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), researchers have captured pictures of the brain while patients experienced a pain stimulus with and without acupuncture to determine acupuncture's effect on how the brain processes pain. Results of the study, which the researchers say suggest the effectiveness of acupuncture, were presented November 30 at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

Acupuncture is widely used in China for treatment of acutestroke. A few controlled studies have been published over the last 10 years, but the best-designed and largest studies failed to find benefit.

For example, a single-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 104 people who had just experienced a stroke failed to find any benefit with 10 weeks of twice-weekly acupuncture.Similarly, a single-blind, controlled study of 150 people recovering from stroke compared acupuncture (including electro-acupuncture), high-intensity muscle stimulation, and sham treatment.

Erectile dysfunction

Here's a study on how erectile dysfunction can be helped with acupuncture - in 13 out of 19 people, acupuncture was effective in healing erectile dysfunction.
