Olympic Athletes and Acupuncture

Every 4 years, the world watches as the greatest athletes in the world display the best of the best: the best athleticism, the best prowess, and the best skill in every sport imaginable. It’s tempting to think of Olympians as superheroes, but in reality they’re human just like you and me, which means that they’re susceptible to injury as well.

Olympians have coaches, trainers, and medical teams at their disposal, and yet alongside all these resources, Olympic Athletes consistently rely on acupuncture to perform their very best. Whether it’s for recovery, injury prevention, or to simply gain a competitive edge, Olympians have utilized acupuncture to become some of the best athletes in history.

But the benefits that acupuncture provides aren’t exclusive to Olympic Athletes alone.

The reality is that athletes at any level can utilize acupuncture to recover and boost performance. The benefits of acupuncture for sports medicine include:

  • Decrease performance anxiety
Acupuncture has been shown to calm the sympathetic nervous system so that nerves can't easily take over during the competition.
  • Manage not just injuries but sore or tight areas
Acupuncture releases tight knotted muscles and can decrease aches and pains in the body.
  • Reduced inflammation and swelling
Experiencing pain from an injury such as bruising, swelling, or issues with your muscles and ligaments? Fortunately, acupuncture has been proven to help with all of these and relieve pain immediately. By helping the muscles relax and encouraging the body to release natural chemicals that promote healing, you’ll be back to performance condition as soon as possible.
  • Rest
When the right areas of the body are targeted with acupuncture, this boosts energy not only while you’re awake, but also helps enhance the quality of sleep you receive at night. Remember, this is crucial because quality sleep is what allows your muscles to grow and repair. Sleep also gives you the strength for top athletic performance on game day.
  • Better blood flow
The reality is that for all of these things to happen, your blood flow must be improved. Whether it’s to reduce swelling or increase the speed of recovery, increased blood flow is needed to make it happen. Acupuncture does this by naturally encouraging the body to release nitric oxide, which will improve your well-being.
  • Balancing the body
  • Olympic athletes go to many competitions throughout the world to get to the Olympics.  An athlete can be competing at 8pm in Europe, then need to sleep and travel the next day to another competition. When you are balanced you are able to switch gears more efficiently and recover more quickly.

Just as Olympians have routines and schedules that they live by, the best results from acupuncture occur when it is experienced on a consistent and frequent basis. We at Acupuncture Nirvana can recommend a treatment plan for best results.  And we take insurance!
