The joint commission now includes acupuncture in the standard of care for pain management

Joint Commission Recognizes Acupuncture:
Acupuncture added to Joint Commission standards on pain management.

For the first time this year the Joint Commission has included nonpharmacologic approaches in their recommended pain management strategies. Acupuncture is now included in the standard of care for pain management. The Joint Commission is an independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies more than 20,500 health care organizations and programs in the United States. Their mission is to continuously improve health care for the public by evaluating health care organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value. The inclusion of acupuncture as a standard approach to pain management is yet another sign of the growing acceptance of acupuncture in the mainstream American health care system.
